Conservation Tips

Glazing

We only use ultraviolet- absorbing glass and ultraviolet- absorbing acrylic (commonly called "Plexiglas")

Manufactured to filter a minimum of 97% of harmful ultraviolet rays, the glazing will help protect your art from the harmful effects of exposure to ultraviolet light (from sunlight and fluorescent light); however, UV protection doesn't mean you can leave the art in direct and permanent contact with the light.

It is like applying a SPF 30 on your skin, it will protect it from burning but if you leave it for a long period of time, you will look like a lobster. Especially at risk are many contemporary artist materials.

Also the UV properties of the glazing diminish with time and should be replaced at least every five years.

We use mainly UV acrylic in our studios. Also, UV glass is easier to clean  and acrylic will bow.

Glazing should always be separated from the art in order to prevent condensation that may lead to mold, mildew or spots on the art. Should no space be available for a rag mat board, " acrylic spacers" should be used.
