Mat Boards
We only use rag boards with a Neutral Ph. The term "acid-free" used in the framing industry can be deceptive, some of the mat boards are made from wood pulp, although their acidity has been reduced from the raw pulp, it has mostly not been eliminated. Our mat boards are made out of cotton. Look for trouble: if any brown marking appears near the mat opening, this is a sure sign that regular mats haven been used. If the art is important to you, please have it checked by a reputable paper conservator. Be careful, as a new mat board recently available keeps its core white, but is nevertheless acidic. Special note: Photographs should only come in contact with non-buffered rag boards.
